Applying color, powdered gold, and mother-of-pearl mosaic are three of the traditional techniques of Japanese Urushi lacquer work. You will be introduced to them and invited to try your hand at it, after designing your own setting.
You will explore the jewelry techniques involved in working metal and positioning stones. Sitting at a workbench, surrounded by mysterious tools and exotic materials, you will shape the metal and encrust it with vegetable ivory to create motifs on the wings of a jeweled butterfly.
In the lacquer workshop, using tools and materials from far away, you create your lacquered butterfly, praticing three of the lacquer master’s ancestral techniques: placing colors, Maki-e, mosaics in mother of pearl.
